What’s going on in the Museum yard?
Finney and Baloch at the Museum
You may have stopped by to see the canoe projects underway this summer. There are two: the building of a birchbark canoe using traditional Anishinaabe techniques and the restoring a 16-foot-long 1905 birchbark canoe. To hear the full story of why and how the canoes are under construction join us at this year’s Friends of the Madeline Island Museum Annual Meeting.
We will gather outside at the Museum at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 23 for a presentation by Kevin Finney, co-founder and director of the Great Lakes Lifeways Institute. GLLI is dedicated to revitalizing and educating the public about traditional Anishinaabe practices, especially the construction and restoration of ancestral cultural spaces and watercraft, of course, the major mode of traditional transport across the Great Lakes.
You may know Kevin from hearing his outstanding talks at the museum on Anishinaabe architecture and canoe construction. He and GLLI’s managing director Kaesha Baloch are in residence this summer at the Museum and Flicker House. They are both natural teachers and are looking forward to sharing the “Canoe Journey” story, as well as wild crafted tea, maple soda and traditional birchbark cookies.
Together we will review 2024/25 and look ahead to 2026…
